Although most girls are unlikely to encounter whatsoever major gynaecological issues before puberty, there are a number of common weather that can affect pre-pubertal girls, and more serious health concerns that tin can have a long-term affect if left untreated. We spoke to doctors with a special interest in gynae care for girls, for their advice on how to support your daughters' wellness and evolution.

1. Pay attention to symptoms of vulval itching, bleeding, soreness and pain

Dr Nicola Smith, a consultant sexual health physician at The Women's Health Eye, comments:

"There's no need to be actively looking for problems or physically inspecting your girl, but practice pay attention to symptoms that may indicate a problem. Vulval itching should not exist ignored, particularly if information technology goes on and on, as it could point to a more serious skin disease such as LS which is frequently mistaken for chronic thrush."

Mutual conditions that can cause vulval itching in immature girls include eczema, psoriasis, vulvovaginitis and threadworms. GP, Dr Gail Gilbert, says:

"I run into a lot of very young girls whose vulvas tin can be sore, itchy and red. This might exist because of not wiping properly afterwards going to the toilet (wiping from back to front) or allergies to harsh wash products. Threadworms are also really mutual and tin can cause vulval every bit well as anal itching. Once the child is out of nappies, yous really don't get thrush until you get through puberty and that'south because of the hormones and pH changing in the vagina."

More serious problems that can occur include pare diseases such as lichen sclerosus (LS), urinary tract infections and issues related to sexual abuse and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Dr Pallavi Latthe, a consultant gynaecologist and secretary of BritSPAG, comments:

"LS must be treated early with a steroid foam to avoid lasting damage to the skin and labia. LS tin also be a cause of burning when passing urine so can be mistaken for a UTI. If vaginal bleeding occurs in girls a lot younger than 11 (without other characteristics of puberty) it should be immediately investigated to bank check the kid's hormone balance. Equally doctors, nosotros would not be doing our job responsibly if we did not also consider the possibility of abuse when we encounter symptoms of this nature. Girls who have been sexually driveling can become withdrawn, and seeking attending around discomfort in the vulval area tin can be an indirect way of seeking help without speaking about it."

2. Apply over-the-counter medications with caution

Oral medications to treat threadworms tin be bought in pharmacies without prescription, but don't be tempted to self-diagnose or care for symptoms without consulting your physician. Never apply any type of topical medication to your daughter'south vulva (other than emollients) without medical advice, every bit it may make things worse rather than better.

3. Wash with intendance

Wet wipes are a mutual cause of allergies in children and are best avoided. Dr Smith too advises against use of chimera baths, shower gels and perfumed products:

"My advice to mums for things like nappy rash is to clean the surface area with a tissue smeared with emollients such as Doublebase, E45 products or emulsifying ointment. Don't launder your daughter too often equally that tin can cause itching and irritation; children really don't need to be washed every day one time they're out of nappies, only when they're muddy, sweaty or smelly. Just wash with water and very little soap, certainly none on the genitals. Natural almond oil can also be a cracking moisturiser."

4. Buy cotton underwear and breathable clothing

Agile children tin become hot and sticky and non-breathable wearable can irritate sensitive skin. Avoid dressing your daughter in tight trousers or leggings and opt for cotton fiber underwear.

5. Reassure your daughter

Dr Latthe comments:

"As little girls abound and oestrogen starts flooding their bodies they will brainstorm to have sexual urges, just don't make a big deal about masturbation, simply make sure you brand clear what is advisable in public and what information technology non. Reassure them most the appearance of their labia equally growth continues until the age of 18. Offer practical communication most how to keep the vulval surface area clean and most wiping front to back and so on. Also talk over boundaries, consent and inappropriate touching past others."

Dr Smith sums up by stressing the importance of reassuring your daughter that she is healthy and normal:

"Then when her periods kickoff it will feel natural and she will already be confident about her trunk. Focus on the positives of growing up, merely at the same time let her know she can come up to you with any concerns, symptoms or sensations that feel uncomfortable or unusual to her."
